Links of London founders launch Annoushka The founders of Links of London, husband and wife Annoushka Ducas and John Ayton, have launched a new fine jewellery business operating from 11 department stores. The 700 sq ft flagship branch of Annoushka opened in Harvey Nicols in London yesterday July 29 and more concessions are due to open in Harrods, Selfridges, House of Fraser, Liberty and Westfield in London. Annoushka rough cut bracelet The 19 new collections, which feature such sumptuous, romantic themes as Mythology, Simply Cocktail and Yard of Pearl, have been exclusively designed by Annoushka herself in conjunction with design director Liz Olver. Almost all of the collections are designed in 18 carat gold using an array of precious and semi-precious stones. Ducas and Ayton sold Links of London to jewellery maker Folli Follie for £50 million 3 years ago, and now hope their new company will generate over £10 million in year one. Ayton commented that the couple understood “recessions and the opportunities they bring,” declaring himself to be “extremely excited” about the new business Four guest designers are also featured: Angela Hubel, Fei Lui, J Jewels and Wendy Yue, whose gorgeous Fantasie Divine Sanctuary ring with organic pink quartz is pictured below. The collection can be viewed in full on the Annoushka website, where consumers can indulge their passion for gems by creating stackable ring collections and mythic symbols that reflect their birth dates.

After getting its first taste of Europe with a new store in London, Abercrombie & Fitch(ANF Quote) is looking to expand on the continent in a big way.

The Ohio-based teen retailer said Friday it has hired a New York commercial real estate company to scout sites in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Denmark and Sweden for new stores. The expansion follows the March opening of the first Abercrombie & Fitch store in Europe, at Burlington Gardens in London.

Abercrombie and Fitch Co. raised eyebrows last Christmas when the teen retailer insisted it would ride out the recession without resorting to widespread price-slashing.

Then came months of massive double-digit sales declines and dwindling store traffic as shoppers defected to competitors that sold similar clothes at more affordable prices. Industry experts wondered whether the company was risking its business in its attempt to uphold its brand image.

CEO and Chairman of Abercrombie & Fitch, Mike Jeffries, stated that RUEHL took years of planning, mainly for the store's atmosphere and image. From the start, the Company (A&F) was determined to keep the fourth concept veiled from public eyes. Retail analysts viewed this as peculiar. Not even retail landlords approached for space were told about the concept. John C. Shroder (COO of Westfield San Francisco Centre's U.S. operations) confessed that it was A&F's reputation which gave him the confidence to "sign up RUEHL sight-unseen."

Abercrombie Kids be Growing at a Record Rate [01/07 04:38AM]

Ezra Fitch wanted his store to have an ambient, outdoor atmosphere. His strategy to expand the company included the creation of a mail-order catalog. In 1909, Abercrombie & Fitch Co. mailed over 50,000 copies of its 456 page catalog worldwide (a staggering and costly amount of publication at that time, each cost a dollar to produce). The catalog featured outdoor clothing, camping gear, articles, and advice columns. The cost of the catalog nearly bankrupted the company, but the catalog proved to be a profitable marketing device. Within the store, the catalog was available to customers for free. By 1910, the company became the first store in New York to supply clothing to women as well as men. In 1913, after moving into Reade Street, which was not a convenient shopping location for women, the store relocated to a more fashionable and easily accessible midtown address near Fifth Avenue at 55/57 West 36th Street, expanding its inventory to include sportswear. In 1917, the store moved again into a twelve-story building at the corner of Madison Avenue and East 45th Street. The store occupied the entire available space (12 stories).
